How to Clean Shoe Laces

Posted by Erin Shoffer on

Laces are often the most overlooked part of the shoe. They can be frequently forgotten or disregarded during cleaning.  Whatever you do, don't put dirty laces on a clean shoe.  With a few easy steps they are the fastest way to turn your sneakers from a 1 to a 10.

How to Clean Shoe Laces

Flat Lace – Stained with colored powder

  • Step 1: Combine water and solution (dye and alcohol free is the best way to go for white laces) into a bowl. Dip laces a few times to lather.

Rope Lace – Stained with mud

  • Step 1: Combine water and solution into a bowl, detergent may be needed for an extra whitening boost. Dip laces into mixture to flush out dirt.
  • Step 2: Rub laces back and forth in hands to scrub.
  • Step 3: For extra whitening power, it may be necessary to add laundry detergent to the water mixture. This works well to remove stains caused by fabric bleed around lace loops or deep dirt marks.

Clean shoe laces confidently no matter what style. When you are cleaning colored laces, there may be some color bleed in the water, this is normal. If the water becomes discolored due to dye or dirt it may be necessary to change out the water. Keep your sneakers fresh from aglet to aglet.

How to Clean Vans

Posted by Erin Shoffer on

Everyone has a pair of Vans and keeping them clean can be a challenge to everyone from sneakerheads, to kids, to moms. If you have been caught looking at your canvas shoes thinking, “How do I clean these?” you are not alone. With only a few quick steps your Vans will be sparkling again in no time.

Remove the laces and set aside to clean later. Then insert a shoe tree into the sneaker. This will provide a better surface to apply more pressure while cleaning your shoes.

How to Clean Vans

Using an all-natural, dye free cleaner, add a small amount to a bowl filled with water. (Many shoe cleaners on the market are known to stain shoes due to dye or chemicals, we recommend using this sneaker cleaner.)

In order to mix the solution, take a delicate brush and lightly stir the solution using the bristles.

Once mixed, apply the solution to the Vans using the soft brush in circular motions over the entire uppers.

 How to Clean Vans

After using the delicate brush to lather the entire upper of the shoe. Go back over the uppers using a brush with slightly stiffer bristles (we prefer this medium bristle brush) and hit the entire shoe if needed. Using the stiffer bristles helps loosen some dirt that the soft brush couldn’t get. Also, with the medium brush you can scrub the midsoles in a back and forth motion to removed dirt trapped in the rubber cracks.

Once the entire upper has been cleaned, move onto the soles, cleaning them with a very stiff brush. The soles are likely to have the most dirt and grime, and when that gets trapped in the Van’s deep grooves, use a brush that has tough bristles.

 How to Clean Vans

The final step of the pretreat is to take the shoe laces that you set aside and dunk them in the remaining solution mixture and lather by rubbing them in between your hands, then placing them into the laundry bag.

After the shoe has been pretreated, use a microfiber towel and pat the entire shoe down to see if you missed any spots. If not, place the Vans into a laundry bag (we recommend soles together facing opposite directions), and then put in the washing machine with alcohol and dye free detergent and cold water on a normal setting. This step is important for canvas sneakers due to their tight fabric, where dirt can easily get trapped, the washing machine is the only way to fully clean them.

Remove the shoes from the wash and examine to ensure an ideal clean. If the sneakers are up to your standards you can then set them to air dry in a well-ventilated room or outside.

How to Clean Off-White Vapormax

Posted by Erin Shoffer on

Off-White is synonymous with hype in the sneaker industry. So, if you were one of the lucky ones to cop a pair of the Off-White Vapormax's, make sure you keep them looking out-of-the-box fresh with these few simple steps.

- Remove the laces and set aside to clean later. Then take your shoe tree and insert in the sneaker. This will give you a better surface to apply more pressure while you are cleaning your shoes, since the OW Vapormax are a light material.

- Using an all-natural, dye free cleaner, add a small amount to a bowl filled with warm water. (Many shoe cleaners on the market are known to stain shoes due to dye or chemicals, we recommend using this sneaker cleaner.)

- In order to mix the solution, take a delicate brush (it is important to use a brush with soft bristles on any knitted materials) and lightly stir the solution using the bristles.

- Once mixed, you can apply the solution to the Vapormax using the soft brush in circular motions over the entire uppers.

- After using the delicate brush to lather the entire upper of the shoe. You can gently go back over the shoe using a brush with slightly stiffer bristles (we like this medium bristle brush.) Using the stiffer bristles helps remove some more stubborn stains.

- If the medium bristle brush can’t remove all the stains, you can use a microfiber towel and dip a corner into the solution mixture and buff out the stain with your finger.

- Once the entire upper has been cleaned, you can move onto the soles, cleaning them with a  stiff brush. The soles are likely to have the most dirt and grime, and you need to use a brush that has tough bristles to get the rubber really clean.

- The final step of the pretreatment is to take the shoe laces that you set aside and dunk them in the remaining solution mixture and lather by rubbing them in between your hands.

- When the entire shoe has been pretreated you can use a microfiber towel and pat the entire shoe down. This way you can check to see where you should go back and reclean. If the shoe is up to your standards you can then, place them into a laundry bag (make sure they go in soles touching, facing the opposite direction.) Then place the sneakers into a top load washer and using dye and alcohol-free detergent to clean your Off-White’s in cold water with a normal cycle. (This step is necessary for knitted shoes, because it helps remove deep trapped dirt.)

- Lastly, remove your shoe from the washer and let air dry. NEVER use a dryer to dry your shoes!

Time to Clean:

- Rinse any excess food particles off of the shoe.

- Using an all natural cleaner, pour a small amount into a bowl with water and mix with a delicate bristled brush

- With the same soft brush, apply the solution mixture to the shoe in circular motions. Continue until clean.

- Pat dry with a microfiber towel and let the shoe dry.

- Lastly, if the shoe has suede like these Nike SB Dunks, there is a chance that the suede has hardened. To fix, comb out the nap using a brass bristle brush - making sure you are brushing in only one direction.
